Wed, May 3 – The Comets defeated the Colorado Springs Ascent 2 goals to 1 in a hard fought Open Cup match at Sand Creek Stadium. The first half was a very even affair with several chances created by both teams. Chris Edwinson converted a penalty in the 43rd minute after a Ascent defender had handled a cross from Maher Kayali. Colorado Springs started the second half much stronger and created several opportunities before converting a penalty in the 52nd minute. The Comets regained their composure and were denied on several occasions by some excellent goalkeeping from Richie Cullan. In the 71st minute Jake Brodsky was fouled in the penalty area and Mazen Kayali converted from the spot. Danny Huber was ejected in the 85th minute for a tackle from behind on Brandon Madrid. The Ascent mounted several attempts during the final minutes but the Comets held on to secure the victory. Comets lineup - McClellan, Diedrich, Fachini, Hansen, , Edwinson, Monroe (Brodsky – 57th min), Maher Kayali, Stumpf (Smith – 81st min), Mazen Kayali, Concha (Perdew – 55th min), Adams (Huber 72nd min). Man of the match was Rich Hansen while Mazen Kayali and Mark Perdew also performed well.
