Both teams came into this game with wins. On Friday, May 8,1998, the Comets won 5-2 against the Twin Cities Tornado, and the Menace won 3-2 against the Pikes Peak Stampede.
In the first 5 minutes of the game, Colorado's Mark Perdew's shot on goal hit the cross bar. The game continued back and forth with many exciting moments.
At the end of the first half, the score was 0-0 with both teams missing numerous opportunites to score.
Breaking the ice was a goal by Comets' Maher (#20), asssisted by Matt Harrell (#9), in the 51st minute. In the ensuing attack by the Menace, Colorado's Dave Adams (#5) denied an attempted goal by winning the ball away from the Menace attacker. The Menace continued their pressure on the Comets defense.
With only 2:42 left in the game, Comets' John Molet (#24) scored, assisted by Mark Perdew (#3).The final score was Colorado Comets 2 and the Des Moines Menace 0.
