Elect Dr. Bob for USSF President!

August 12, 1998

Dear Friends of American Soccer:

During the past eight years, the sport of soccer in the United States has made many great strides forward. The growing game of soccer, as we know it today, actually bears little resemblance to the sport which existed 30 years ago when professional soccer first burst on the national scene in the form of the North American Soccer League.

Thanks to much hard work in the trenches by players, coaches, administrators and the entire membership of U.S. Soccer, our sport seems well on its way to becoming a major part of the sports scene in the United States.

During the past eight years, Alan Rothenberg's leadership has been the inspiration behind much of the maturation process inside of U.S. Soccer. This leadership culminated in the United States playing host to 1994 World Cup, which turned out to be the most successful World Cup in history.

Keeping in mind this steady progress for the federation and the sport, and noting the desirability of keeping the continuity of a process that began with Alan's presidency, I am pleased to announce that USISL, Inc. and its affiliate leagues will support the candidacy of Dr. Robert Contiguglia for president of U.S. Soccer.

In discussing this matter with our board of directors and the executive committees of our leagues, our choice of candidates was a difficult one. Difficult, because we have two fine individuals running for the presidency.

Now, more than ever, it will be necessary for all factions of U.S. Soccer -- professionals, amateurs and youth -- to come together if the sport of soccer is to reach its full potential in the United States. If we are serious about winning a World Cup, we will only get there through unity of purpose.

Bob Contiguglia has the determination and ability to bring these groups together. As an administrator, former player, coaches' committee chairman and nationally elected soccer official, he is familiar with the soccer part of the presidency. As a physician and private businessman, he brings to his candidacy the business acumen so important in leading the federation.

His successful leadership of the U.S. Youth Soccer Association mirrors the successes of the Rothenberg era, as he galvanized the best of USYSA and transformed it into a highly marketable sports organization.

To reach our goals, we must keep moving ahead, do the right things and bring the right groups together. With this in mind, we feel that Bob Contiguglia is best equipped to lead us through the next four years, on the way to 2010.

The USISL, which includes the A-League and D3 Pro League, consists of nearly 140 teams in 38 states, including the W-League, the only national soccer league for women. We are proud to endorse Dr. Bob Contiguglia for president of U.S. Soccer.

Yours sincerely,

USISL, Inc.

Francisco Marcos
President
