DENVER (Monday, June 10, 2002) - Dallas forward Bobby Rhine scored three goals and added an assist as the Burn defeated the Colorado Rapids 4-1 at the Cotton Bowl on Saturday night. The early moments of the game mirrored Colorado's last trip to the Cotton Bowl, and the team was slow to get going in the Texas heat and humidity.
After seemingly having awakened from the early lapse in concentration, the Rapids spent the next several minutes controlling the ball in the midfield. The attacking combination of Mark Chung, Chris Henderson and Carlos Valderrama began to click, and Colorado advanced the ball into the Dallas defensive third on several opportunities.
The first half nearly ended without the Rapids making a serious threat at the Dallas goal, but a quick restart near the penalty area in injury time by Valderrama found Henderson streaking at the target. Henderson ripped a vicious shot at goalkeeper Matt Jordan, who could only parry the ball away, but the rebound fell out of danger.
The second half began with one of the better scoring chances by the Rapids when Robin Fraser flashed a header wide of the net. Valderrama set up the opportunity with a well-placed freekick that traced a line across the top of the 18-yard box to Fraser, who gained position but couldn't find the net with his shot.
Rhine completed his dream night, and the hat trick, with a goal in the 73rd minute after tallying twice in the first half of play. Working the give-and-go with Vaca, Rhine converted from close range after Vaca's pass from the corner flag sailed through the penalty area unimpeded.
Chung ruined the Burn shutout with his sixth goal of the season deep into injury time, with Valderrama and Titus providing the assists.
The Rapids return home to INVESCO Field on Saturday, June 15 when they host the New England Revolution at 7 p.m. MT.
Scoring the Rapids only goal in the team's 4-1 loss to Dallas, midfielder Mark Chung increased his goal-scoring streak to three games. The former MetroStar has scored five goals in the last three games for Colorado, earning him back-to-back Player of the Week honors. He is now tied for sixth in the league with teammate Chris Henderson and Jeff Cunningham of the Columbus Crew with six goals and two assists. The last time Chung scored more than three goals in a season was in 1997 as a member of the Kansas City Wizards when he netted a career high 10 goals. Last week, the three-time MLS All-Star become only the fourth player in MLS history to be named MLS Player of the Week in consecutive weeks.
The Rapids usual Tuesday Media Luncheon has been moved to Wednesday at 12 p.m. at the Westminster Training Facility. Please note the change.
After tying host nation Korea 1-1 at Daegu on Monday, the U.S. now has four points to their credit with only one game remaining in opening round play. Team USA will next face Poland on Friday, June 14th at 5:25 a.m. MT live from Daejeon, Korea on ESPN2. Needing only a tie (1 point) to advance to the second round, the "Round of 16," the U.S. would face either Mexico, Italy or Croatia - currently the top three from Group G play.
After recovering from this weekend's disappointing loss to the Dallas Burn, the Rapids are looking forward to this weekend's match-up against Eastern Conference opponent the New England Revolution. In the lone game between the clubs thus far, the Rapids have posted a 1-0 record - a crushing 5-2 victory on May 22. The Rapids currently lead the all-time series 9-5-1. Both teams will look to snap a one-game losing streak, as the Revolution were defeated by D.C. United 3-2 on Saturday. Colorado currently sits in second place in the Western Conference with 19 points, just behind the San Jose Earthquakes with 23.
After being paid a visit by the Rapids, San Jose Cyberrays (WUSA) and Washington Freedom (WUSA) prior to Colorado's season opener, it's time for the patients of Denver's Children's Hospital to say "thanks" to the soccer players that made a difference this spring. On Friday, June 14, from 10:30 -12 p.m., numerous children and their families will visit the Rapids at their Westminster Training Facility to watch practice, eat lunch with and meet the players. Greeters will meet the children and their families as they arrive, handing out nametags to all and gift bags to each child. In addition, all children and family members will receive Kicks For Kids tickets for Saturday night's 7:00 p.m. match-up with the New England Revolution at INVESCO Field. Pizza for lunch will be provided by Old Chicago's.
Agenda * 10:30 a.m. Children arrive at the training center for practice * 11:15am -12:00pm Children eat lunch with the Rapids
The Colorado Rapids are teaming up with the Denver Domestic Violence Task Force, the Denver Broncos and AT&T Media Services to produce a public service announcement titled "Domestic Violence is NOT a Game!". Rapids midfielder Chris Henderson and Bronco wide receiver Ed McCaffrey will help produce the PSA message. The producers, however, need the help of the Denver community as well. The PSA needs people, especially children on sports teams to come in uniform for the filming of the PSA. The filming will be Wednesday, June 12 at 2:30 p.m. at INVESCO Field @ Mile High. Parking is free that day. Filming starts at 3 p.m. and may take up to two hours. Each participant must sign a waiver and a release form. For more information, call 303-694-7438 or 720-913-8026. Bring your friends, family or team and help prevent domestic abuse.
