NEWS RELEASE

DENVER (Monday, June 24, 2002) - San Jose forward Dwayne DeRosario and the Earthquakes beat the visiting Colorado Rapids 4-0 Saturday night at Spartan Stadium. Even a new line-up for the Rapids couldn't hold off the Earthquake attack, as DeRosario figured in three goals on the night as he assisted on the first goal and created two own goals in the second half.
San Jose scored in the fifth minute after a corner kick by DeRosario. San Jose defender Jimmy Conrad leapt over Colorado defender Ritchie Kotschau and nodded the ball into the right side-netting. San Jose stretched the lead to 2-0 in the 62nd minute by way of an own goal, as a cross by DeRosario was deflected off the chest of Rapids defender Rick Titus.
The Earthquakes added another goal in the 68th minute when midfielder Ian Russell passed it off to Graziani who shot it in from the far post. In the 90th minute Donovan sent a throw-in to DeRosario who tried to lift the ball over an on-coming Kramer, but it hit Kotschau's knee and sailed into the Rapids net.
After helping team USA reach their best World Cup finish since 1930, Rapid midfielder Pablo Mastroeni will be back in uniform, and a likely starter for the Rapids match against the New York/New Jersey MetroStars on Wednesday, June 26. Mastroeni, who played in three of the Team USA's five matches, proved to be an important part of the U.S. defense. Despite a loss to Germany, Mastroeni held strong, helping to hold Germany to just six shots. The Rapids midfielder was the only player to make the final 23-man roster that did not play in a single World Cup qualifying match. After taking a few days off to spend time with his family, Mastroeni will rejoin the Rapids at Giants Stadium on Wednesday as they take on the MetroStars.
The Rapids usual Tuesday Media Luncheon at the Westminster Training Facility will NOT be held this week due to team travel for Wednesday's game against the MetroStars. Media luncheons will return to the regular Tuesday afternoon schedule beginning Tuesday, July 2.
A match on Wednesday against the New York/New Jersey MetroStars will mark the end of the Colorado Rapids toughest road trip this season. After losing their fourth consecutive match on Saturday - a 4-0 shutout by the San Jose Earthquakes - the Rapids will aim to end their losing streak and stop the MetroStars' two game winning streak. The two teams met earlier this season at INVESCO Field on April 13, where the MetroStars won a hard fought game 2-1. Currently, the MetroStars are in second place in the Eastern Conference and sit just two points behind the Rapids in the overall league standings. Kickoff time at Giants Stadium is slated for 5:30 p.m. MT and will be broadcast live on Fox Sports Net.
Following a collision with a San Jose Earthquake defender on Saturday, Rapid midfielder Mark Chung received five stitches on his upper lip and was taken out for the rest of the game after the injury. Chung is still a probable starter for Wednesday's game in New Jersey.
The Rapids Community Care Foundation will hold its annual Golf and Fly-Fishing Tournament at a privately owned ranch June 29-30. The tournament will feature all the Colorado Rapids players, coaches, and General Manager who will play golf and fish with other tournament participants. So far, this year's tournament has raised $38,000 for the Foundation, the most ever raised in the tournament's three-year history. If you have questions about the tournament or the foundation please contact Annie Vinton, Director of the Colorado Rapids Community Care Foundation, at 303-299-1575.
On June 19 the Colorado Rapids called up Zach Kingsley, a forward from A-League affiliate Seattle Sounders. Kingsley made his Rapids debut against DC United in the 89th minute and suited up for Saturday's game against the Earthquakes but did not play. The University of Washington midfielder scored five goals and one assist as an 18-game starter in his senior season for the Huskies.
As part of Six Flags Elitch Garden's Soccer Month, Colorado Rapids defenders Jeff Stewart and Rick Titus will be signing autographs and talking to fans at the entrance to the water park on Friday, June 28 from 4-5:30p.m. Those who wear Rapids shirts or jerseys to the park will receive a buy one, get one free admittance.
As you may be aware, the Governor of Colorado has announced a ban on fireworks in Colorado during the current drought emergency. Please be advised that this ban does not apply to professional shows. The Colorado Rapids annual fireworks extravaganza at INVESCO Field at Mile High falls into this category, which we have confirmed with the City/County of Denver and State of Colorado. This means that our display following the July 4 game against Chicago will go on as planned. For further information, please call the Rapids at 303-299-1599.
