NEWS RELEASE

Colorado Rapids forward Chris Carrieri was selected as Major League Soccer's Player of the Week for the week ending July 7, 2002. Carrieri recorded the second hat trick in team history Thursday night as the Colorado Rapids beat the Chicago Fire 3-2 in front of a record-setting crowd of 61,213 at INVESCO Field. Teammate John Spencer owns the other three-goal outburst after his hat trick beat D.C. United last year - ironically, on the Fourth of July.
Carrieri took control of the game in the final moments, scoring twice in five minutes. Carrieri leveled the score again in the 82nd minute of play after the MLS all-time assist leader, Carlos Valderrama, sprayed a pass to the right wing finding Wes Hart. The midfielder slipped, but regained his form and fed Carrieri at the top of the box, where he sent a beautifully placed shot to the right upper corner side netting, beating Thornton again.
Six minutes later, Carrieri finished off the hat trick - his sixth goal of the season - on a 20-yard blast into the lower right corner past the diving Thornton.
The Rapids will return to INVESCO Field at Mile High on July 13, where they will face the Los Angeles Galaxy at 7 p.m. MT.
Rapids midfielder Chris Henderson scored his seventh goal of the season on Sunday afternoon, making him the Rapids leading goal scorer, and tying him for seventh in the league in goal scoring. Henderson scored early on a far post shot that zipped past Fire 'keeper Zach Thornton in the 12th minute. The Rapids held off the Fire for the rest of the first half, but gave up the equalizer in the 63rd minute when forward Josh Wolff headed the ball into the net after his first shot was deflected off the crossbar. Tied 1-1 at the end of regulation, the game went to overtime where Fire midfielder David Vaudreuil got a shot past Kramer for the win in the 95th minute.
The Rapids wives raised $2,159 on July 4th at INVESCO Field in their fund raising efforts for the Red Cross, benefitting the victims of the Colorado wildfires. Fans gave monetary donations to the wives, including names like Chung, Spencer, Garlick, Valderrama, Hankinson, Kramer and Kotschau, who wore their husbands' jerseys at the gates of INVESCO Field from 6-8 p.m. Prior to the fireworks display, the Rapids Foundation presented the check to the Red Cross' Disaster Relief Fund.
The Colorado Rapids will host its weekly media luncheon on Tuesday, July 9 at the Westminster Training Facility at 12 p.m. For more information, call the Rapids Media Relations Department at (303) 299-1487 or (303) 299-1590.
The Colorado Rapids will face the Charleston Battery in their first U.S. Open Cup match of 2002 at Blackbaud Stadium in Charleston, South Carolina on Wednesday, July 17. Charleston, who just ended a 12-game win streak, leads the A-League with a record of 14-2-1. Dating back to 1914, the U.S. Open Cup is the nation's oldest soccer tournament. The game will serve as a sort of homecoming for Rapids head coach Tim Hankinson, who founded the Battery in 1992 and won USISL coach of the year honors there in 1994. The Rapids will look to top their best performance to date, when they finished just short of the title, dropping the championship game to Rochester in 1999.
The Colorado Rapids will be making various appearances in the Denver area this week. Marvin Quijano will be appearing at the Denver Health Neighborhood event on July 12 from 1-3 p.m. On Sunday, July 14, Rick Titus will be at the Dairy Queen in Highlands Ranch from 1-3 p.m., while Kyle Beckerman will be at the Dairy Queen in Englewood from 3:30-5:30 p.m. For more information on these events, please call 303-299-1504.
A record setting crowd of 61, 213 fans watched as the Colorado Rapids beat the Chicago Fire 3-2 on July 4 followed by the biggest fireworks display in Colorado, put on by the legendary Zambelli family. The attendance figure is now in the record books as the largest crowd ever for a Rapids game and fifth largest on the all-time MLS attendance list.
