NEWS RELEASE

A dramatic overtime goal by John Spencer helped the Rapids overcome a tenacious Charleston Battery team in third round U.S. Open Cup action at Blackbaud Stadium on Wednesday night, July 17 in Charleston, SC. The 1-0 win snapped a three-game Open Cup losing streak for the Rapids, who move on to play the Dallas Burn in the quarterfinals of the nation's oldest soccer tournament on August 7.
On Saturday night, Chris Carrieri scored an 88th minute goal for the Colorado Rapids against the Columbus Crew to give the Rapids a draw and a come-from-behind point in an entertaining match in front of 21,432 at Crew Stadium. Columbus broke through in the 28th minute and took the lead when Dante Washington collected a loose ball in the six-yard box and hit the netting just inside the right post.
The Rapids travel to Foxboro, MA. where they will play the New England Revolution on Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m. (MT). The last time the teams met was at INVESCO Field on June 15, when the Revolution left with a 2-1 victory. With a new line-up in place, as well as forward John Spencer back in action, the Rapids are ready to avenge the loss, and move their way back towards the top of league standings. The game will be broadcast on Fox Sports Rocky Mountain, live at 5:30 p.m. (MT).\
The Rapids return to home play again on Saturday, July 27th as they take on the Dallas Burn at 7p.m. at INVESCO Field. The Rapids will have just returned home from their longest road trip of the season, and will be looking to play the Burn on home turf, as they are 0-2 against the Burn so far this season - both matches have been played at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. The Rapids are currently just four points behind the Burn in the Western Conference Standings.
Colorado Rapids fans will have the chance to run with the best of them as the Run the Rapids 2002 Stadium Race, a 2.6 mile run or walk, comes to INVESCO Field. The race was developed to bring individuals together to celebrate running and soccer and to support the Colorado Rapids Community Care Foundation. Start time for the race is set for 5:00 p.m. Prices for participants are: children under 12 & Seniors $20, $25; Adults $25, $30. Rapids' forward Chris Carrieri is on a serious scoring streak, scoring six of the Rapids' last eight goals, including a hat trick on July 4th and two game winners. This sudden offensive burst from the forward has not gone unnoticed by the league, as he was voted MLS player of the week after his July 4th performance. Carrieri is also 9th in the league as a goal-scoring leader, and tied for fourth in the game-winning goal leaders category with three this season. Currently posting 7 goals, 4 assists after 17 games, the 2nd year University of North Carolina product has already surpassed his rookie season tally of 5 goals, 4 assists in 2001.
Tomorrow's regularly scheduled weekly media luncheon at the Westminster Training Facility has been cancelled, as the team is still on its 10-day road trip.
