Battle For Playoff Position Comes Down to Final Game

DENVER (Tuesday, September 17, 2002) - The Colorado Rapids will square off against Western Conference rivals Kansas City in the final regular season game of the 2002 season on Friday, September 20, at 7:00 p.m. at INVESCO Field. (Please note that this game has been switched from its original game date - Sept. 21 - to Friday night.)

The first 6,000 fans ages 16 and under will receive a free Colorado Rapids soccer ball, courtesy of Dairy Queen.

With only a single game left for each of the ten league teams, this weekend's action will determine the eight playoff teams and their seeds. Amazingly, each team in the league still has a chance to make the 2002 playoffs, as none have yet been eliminated from a chance at MLS Cup 2002, which will be played at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts, on October 20.

The Rapids currently hold the fourth playoff seed, and will face the Dallas Burn in the first round of the playoffs beginning on Wednesday, September 25. The Burn and the Rapids are locked into the fourth and fifth seeds in the playoffs and will meet in the first round regardless of this weekend's outcomes. Should the Rapids fall to the number five position in the playoff table, they would meet the Burn first at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas (Sept. 25) before returning home for the second game of the series at INVESCO Field on Saturday, September 28.
