DALLAS - The Colorado Rapids stunned Dallas Wednesday night at the Cotton Bowl, knocking off the Burn in series overtime after the two sides reached an 1-1 impasse in Game Three. Midfielder Mark Chung headed home the series-clinching goal in the first minute of the tiebreaker, sending the Rapids to the semifinals for the first time since 1997.
The Burn opened the scoring early in the first half of regulation play, as Bobby Rhine nodded home a Chad Deering free kick in the sixth minute of play. Taking the restart from the left side of the penalty area, Deering swung the ball into the center of the box, where Rhine slipped in between a pair of Colorado defenders.
The Rapids knotted the game at 1-1 in the 22nd minute, when midfielder Carlos Valderrama intercepted a defensive clear by Dallas' Tenywa Bonseu, snapping the ball down into the run of play. Chung and Chris Carrieri both touched the ball forward with a series of delicate backheels into the box for John Spencer. Spencer fooled goalkeeper Jordan with an extra touch on the ball, setting up the soft shot to equalize.
Regulation play ended with a tie score as neither side managed to find a definitive advantage. The best chance of the overtime period came in the 94th minute with a Colorado free kick from 30-yards out. Valderrama chipped the ball to the far post, but the Dallas defenders managed to intercept the attempt and clear the ball to safety.
With no scoring in regulation or overtime, the series stood at four points a side, forcing a series tiebreaker immediately after the final whistle.
The Rapids clinched the series with a goal in the first minute of the series overtime period, taking advantage of numbers in the penalty area. Seth Trembly sent the ball forward to midfielder Chris Henderson at the near corner to set up the play. Henderson swung the ball in front of the net for Chung, who rose over the defense to nod the ball sharply down and past Matt Jordan, giving the Rapids the series win and the berth in the semifinals.
Colorado moves on to play the winner of the Kansas City - Los Angeles series, being played tonight at the Rose Bowl. If Colorado faces the Galaxy, the series will begin play on Saturday, October 5th in California. If Kansas City should advance, play begins at INVESCO Field on Friday, October 4th.
