Colorado's 2-1 shoot-out loss Saturday was their third consecutive opening-day defeat after a 2-1 shoot-out loss in Columbus last season and a 3-0 loss at Kansas City in 1996.
Project-40 allocation Joey DiGiamarino started and played 90 minutes in his first MLS game. "Digi" started at left back, while Sean Henderson pushed to the right side in place of the injured Chris Martinez, who is still questionable for Saturday with an abdominal strain.
Colorado also debuted Marquinho and Waldir Saenz. Both played 90 minutes and were a vital part of the Colorado attack, though the Rapids' lone goal was as a result of an own goal when Dallas' Mark Santel knocked a Paul Bravo shot into his own net.
The San Jose Clash lost 4-3 to the L.A. Galaxy Saturday in a shoot-out. San Jose, who will face Colorado Saturday, came back from deficits of 2-0 and 3-1 to force the shoot-out.
Former Rapids F Roy Wegerle scored twice as D.C. United opened the season with a 3-2 victory over the Kansas City Wizards.
