NEWS RELEASE
DENVER (March 4, 1998) -- Welton scored his third goal in three games to give the Los Angeles Galaxy a 1-0 victory over Colorado Saturday night before a crowd of 19,252 for the Rapids' home opener at Mile High Stadium.
Welton, the Galaxy's leading scorer in 1997, took a cross from Ezra Hendrickson and placed a header inside the far post in the 28th minute.
Colorado's entire lineup dyed their hair blonde for the match, but it did not bring the team any luck in finding the Galaxy nets. Colorado launched 19 total shots at Los Angeles goalkeeper Kevin Hartman, but Hartman had four saves to record the shutout.
Colorado's scoring chances included a free kick by midfielder Marquinho that hit the crossbar and a point-blank shot by Marcelo Balboa that the U.S. National Team's all-time appearances leader buried into Hartman's chest.
