NEWS RELEASE

DENVER (Friday, June 5, 1998) - Colorado Rapids general manager Dan Counce today announced that Brazilian midfielder Marquinho has been released from his contract at the player's request and will leave the Rapids immediately and return to his native Brazil. Marquinho, who was allocated to the Rapids before the start of the 1998 season, cited family issues as the reason for his desire to return to South America.
Marquinho had recorded three goals and three assists for the Rapids in eleven games, but recently had been coming off the bench as a substitute.
General manager Dan Counce said the departure of Marquinho was due to circumstances beyond the team's control.
"Losing a player of his caliber is very disappointing, but when you bring a player into a new country for the first time there are risks that come with it. We are obviously very disappointed that Marquinho's family felt it necessary to leave, and we wish them all the best of luck," said Counce.
Rapids coach Glenn "Mooch" Myernick echoed the sentiments of Counce, saying that the team is losing a very talented player.
"Marquinho had the ability to be a very strong player in this league, but for reasons out of our control and off the soccer field, it became obvious that Marquinho had to return to Brazil," said Myernick.
