The Rapids return to action Thursday night in Los Angeles against the Galaxy in what will be Colorado's first game since a win over San Jose back on June 6. The Rapids, who have won three games in a row, play only three league games during the month of June as MLS assumes a relaxed schedule during World Cup '98 in France.
Chief on the minds of the Rapids will be avenging an embarrassing 7-4 defeat to the Galaxy at the Rose Bowl on May 6, in which the Galaxy set what was then a MLS record for the most goals scored by one team in a league game. The Galaxy went on to break their own record when they defeated the Dallas Burn 8-1 on June 4. Including a 1-0 win over the Rapids at Mile High Stadium on April 4, the Galaxy leads the season series 2-0.
Colorado will face Los Angeles' newly-signed forward, Mexican legend Carlos Hermosillo, for the first time since the forward joined the Galaxy on May 27. Hermosillo, who recorded three assists in his first game with Los Angeles, is the all-time leading scorer for the Mexican National Soccer Team.
Colorado's three-game winning streak equals the franchise record for the longest regular-season winning streak. The Rapids have won three straight regular season games three times before (6/30/96-7/7/96, 6/13/97-6/21/97, 8/2/97-8/15/97). The Rapids' longest overall winning streak is five games, including a win over San Jose on the final day of the 1997 regular season, followed by four consecutive playoff wins.
Colorado captain Steve Trittschuh will miss Thursday's game as he serves a league-imposed automatic one-game suspension for yellow card accumulation after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season on June 6 against San Jose.
The Rapids improved their record at home to 5-2, but are 1-6 on the road. In the seven home games, Colorado has outscored its opponents 16-9, while being outscored 23-13 in the seven road games. Colorado is giving up an average of 3.29 goals per game on the road, while surrendering only 1.29 goals per game at home.
Colorado will travel to Seattle following Thursday's game for a Sunday contest against the Seattle Sounders, the A-League affiliate of the Rapids. The non-league game will be played Sunday at 3:30 p.m. MST. The Sounders are the team that Rapids goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann led to two A-League titles before joining Colorado.
No injuries to report.
