FORMER CANADIAN NATIONAL TEAM COACH BOB LENARDUZZI ON JASON BENT

DENVER (Friday, July 17, 1998) - Former Canadian National Team coach Bob Lenarduzzi reacted to the Colorado Rapids' signing of Jason Bent. Lenarduzzi coached Bent as the Canadian National Team attempted to qualify for the 1998 World Cup.

"There is no doubt Jason has a very bright future at the international level. He is a player with the talent today and the potential that the Canadian National Team will be built around for many years to come."

"The Rapids are getting a very strong all-around player who always wants the ball. He loves to link the defense to the attack and can really spark the offense with his passing and speed. But his defensive ability is his calling card, he is a very tough defender to shake. With his speed and his work rate and his not being afraid to play a very physical game, he really is a strong defensive presence."

"My impression of Jason was cemented when he made his international debut in a World Cup qualifier against Mexico. Here he was playing his first game at the top level, and he was never flustered or rattled. We knew we had a player when he performed like that in his debut."

"He is a very good midfielder, but his versatility could also easily make him useful at an outside defender slot. The speed and ball control skills that he possesses are a perfect fit for that position."

"He definitely has the tools to help the Rapids in MLS. MLS is a fast league with good, strong players, and there is nothing about Jason's game that would not have him ready for that level. Jason is the kind of classy, young player that you want around on your team, as he is only going to get better with more games and experience."
