NEWS RELEASE

DENVER (Wednesday, March 28, 2001) - The Colorado Rapids today announced the latest addition to the front office staff for 2001 with the hiring of Mark Saunders as director of public relations
"We are excited to have Mark join our team this season," said Rapids' general manager, Dan Counce. "Mark's experience in the print media and his knowledge of the Denver area make him a great addition to our growing, front-office staff."
Before joining the Rapids' front office, Saunders was the sports editor for the Colorado Daily newspaper in Boulder, Colo. Saunders has also been a writer for several syndicated newspapers and national magazines. In addition, he has also worked as an advertising copywriter, editor-in-chief of sports book publisher and as an English Instructor at Front Range Community College.
A Calif. native, Saunders moved to Colo. in 1991 to attend graduate school in English Literature at the University of Colorado. During that time, he met his wife, Karen, who is now a Boulder real estate agent. Interestingly enough, his first career was as a biology technician for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service * until an angry fisherman threatened to kill him five miles out at sea.
An avid soccer fan, Saunders played defender in several youth soccer leagues throughout junior high and high school.
"I'm excited to be a part of the Rapids," said Saunders. "Being the public relations director for a MLS team is a perfect marriage between my love for soccer with my background in journalism and communications."
Saunders spends his time training, working on a novel or hanging out with his wife and two over-nourished cats.
