DENVER (Wednesday, April 25, 2001) - The Colorado Rapids Community Care Foundation received a $2000 grant from Golden High School at the Metro Denver Region Awards Ceremony last Wednesday, April 18, at the Denver Center for The Performing Arts.
"We were excited that the Colorado Rapids Community Care Foundation was awarded this grant," said Annie Vinton, the director of the foundation. "After being interviewed by the students, we were happy that they chose us as a worthy cause to support! We look forward to working with them to fulfilling the foundation's goal of improving our community one goal at a time."
The grant was awarded through the El Pomar Youth in Community Service (EPYCS) in association with the El Pomar Foundation.
The El Pomar Foundation, based in Colorado Springs, contributes approximately $18 million through direct grants and operating programs to support Colorado non-profit organizations. EPYCS is a student run program in which high school students make grants (approximately $8,000 per school) to non-profit organizations throughout the state of Colorado. It is a leadership experience that empowers high school students to directly impact their community through involvement in service, philanthropy and the non-profit sector.
The Colorado Rapids Community Care Foundation, a 501c(3) not-for-profit corporation established in 1998, strives to promote and encourage underprivileged children to participate in activities, such as soccer, as a means to build character, improve self-esteem and to develop interpersonal and leadership skills.
"We're delighted that the foundation has received this kind of recognition from the community - especially from young people like the students at Golden High School," said Rapids general manager Dan Counce.
Entering into its sixth year as a franchise, the Rapids are in an excellent position to give back to the community. The players and the organization have been extremely active in charity work. The foundation is now taking this commitment to a new level and setting the standard for professional sports teams in Colorado.
