The Rapids (1-3-1) will look to extend their winning streak beyond one game as they host the Tampa Bay Mutiny (2-3-0) on Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m. at Mile High Stadium. The match-up marks the first meeting of the clubs in the 2001 season. The Rapids / Mutiny all-time series is 7-6 in favor of the Mutiny. The teams split the 2000 series in back-to-back games.
Please note that the game time is now 7:00 p.m. A change from the original schedule.
Coach Hankinson will lead the Rapids against his former team, the Tampa Bay Mutiny. The game marks Hankinson's first match-up of 2001 season against his former club - that he guided to a 39-38-3 mark in two-and-a-half seasons. Hankinson took Tampa Bay to back-to-back post-season appearances in 1999 and 2000; last year as the No. 4 seed versus the Los Angeles Galaxy.
Rapids' midfielder Paul Bravo scored his 47th career goal last Saturday in a 1-0 win against the Dallas Burn. The goal was Bravo's 34th goal with the Rapids (he scored 13 for San Jose in his first season). He is first in all-time scoring for the team.
Rapids defender Marcelo Balboa (1 goal, 1 assist in 2001) is two assists shy of reaching the 20 goals/20 assists plateau in Major League Soccer. The versatile defender has been used as an offensive, midfielder this season by head coach Tim Hankinson. Balboa scored his 20th career goal on April 14th against the MetroStars at Mile High Stadium.
Balboa (20 goals, 19 assists, and 59 points in 131 games) is tops in the league among defenders in scoring and is third all-time for the Rapids.
