RHINE HAT TRICK PROPELS DALLAS PAST RAPIDS

Colorado Remains in Second Place with 19 Points Despite Loss

DALLAS (Saturday, June 8, 2002) - Dallas forward Bobby Rhine scored three goals and added an assist as the Burn defeated the Colorado Rapids 4-1 at the Cotton Bowl on Saturday night.

The early moments of the game mirrored Colorado's last trip to the Cotton Bowl, and the team was slow to get going in the Texas heat and humidity. After surviving a scary early moment when an errant back pass nearly created a scoring chance for the Burn, the Rapids were caught napping by a long pass and surrendered the game's opening goal in the 4th minute.

Bobby Rhine put the Burn in front with his first goal of the season after Antonio Martinez - who collected assists on all three Dallas goals in the May 18 meeting between the two teams - threaded a long pass from his own defensive end through the center circle. Rhine outran defender Rick Titus and chased down the ball at the top of the penalty area before sending his low shot home for the goal.

After seemingly having awakened from the early lapse in concentration, the Rapids spent the next several minutes controlling the ball in the midfield. The attacking combination of Mark Chung, Chris Henderson and Carlos Valderrama began to click, and Colorado advanced the ball into the Dallas defensive third on several opportunities.

But Dallas took advantage of its next scoring chance and doubled the lead on another goal by Rhine. This time, Rhine took the service of Oscar Pareja and dribbled just a few yards before unloading a 30-yard laser shot with his right foot that eluded goalkeeper Scott Garlick and nestled into the upper-left corner of the goal.

Then, in the 35th minute, Rhine and Martinez once again tortured the Rapids. This time Rhine set up the score after receiving a pass from Martinez, sending a bending pass across the penalty area to Jason Kreis, who volleyed the ball into the upper corner of the net.

The first half nearly ended without the Rapids making a serious threat at the Dallas goal, but a quick restart near the penalty area in injury time by Valderrama found Henderson streaking at the target. Henderson ripped a vicious shot at goalkeeper Matt Jordan, who could only parry the ball away, but the rebound fell out of danger.

The second half began with one of the better scoring chances by the Rapids when Robin Fraser flashed a header wide of the net. Valderrama set up the opportunity with a well-placed freekick that traced a line across the top of the 18-yard box to Fraser, who gained position but couldn't find the net with his shot.

The Rapids dodged a bullet in the 62nd minute when Martinez's shot at an open net skipped off the crossbar. Joselito Vaca played a pass across the six-yard box that Garlick lunged to tip away. Hurrying to beat the collapsing Colorado defense, Martinez sent his shot just high.

Rhine completed his dream night, and the hat trick, with a goal in the 73rd minute. Working the give-and-go with Vaca, Rhine converted from close range after Vaca's pass from the corner flag sailed through the penalty area unimpeded.

Chung ruined the Burn shutout with his sixth goal of the season deep into injury time, with Valderrama and Titus providing the assists.
