Colorado Rapids vs. Los Angeles Galaxy - Kickoff: 7:00 MT Saturday, June 13, 2002 INVESCO Field - Denver, CO Radio: 1510-AM KNRC (English) Radio: Radio Unica 1150-AM (Spanish) RAPIDS ALL-TIME MLS RECORD v. GALAXY Overall: 9-19-0 Home: 7-7-0 Away: 2-12-0 Shootout: 2-1 (1996-99) Overtime: 2-2-0 Playoffs: 0-2-0
After missing the last match-up between the clubs on June 1 at INVESCO Field, World Cup stars Pablo Mastroeni and Cobi Jones will face off against one another for the first time since helping the U.S. to its best World Cup finish in over 70 years. Mastroeni has not appeared for the Rapids since his return to action on June 26 versus the MetroStars at Giants Stadium, but will look to reestablish himself in the midfield behind Carlos Valderrama on Saturday - a position he has appeared in only six times this season. Jones travels to INVESCO Field as the Galaxy's all-time leading scorer against Colorado, posting 13 goals and 3 assists since 1996. Look for Mastroeni and Jones to battle hard in an effort to create offensive opportunities, as buildup through the midfield was key in the Rapids' 3-2 victory on June 1.
The outcome of each of the last three Rapids games has been decided in the last three minutes of regulation play or in overtime. With 11 goals scored in final 15 minutes of regulation and overtime this year, the Rapids lead the league in late goals. On April 27 at the Rose Bowl, John Spencer scored the game-winner and lone goal in the 94th minute. On June 1 at INVESCO Field, Chung scored the game-winner in the 76th minute to lead Colorado to a 3-2 victory over L.A. - the first two-game win streak against the Galaxy since 1999. The Rapids have never taken three straight from the Galaxy.
Forward Chris Carrieri has Colorado's most dependable scoring threat over the last several games. The University of North Carolina product has scored five of the Rapids' last six goals, including a hat trick on Independence Day that earned him MLS Player of the Week Honors. He has also tallied game winning goals on two consecutive games this season - June 26th at the MetroStars and July 4th against the Fire. Carrieri is the first player to accomplish this feat since 1999 when Jorge Dely Valdes registered three consecutive game winning goals.
Carlos "El Pibe" Valderrama and midfielder Mark Chung rank second and third respectively in the MLS assist standings. Valderrama is on a three game assist streak coming into tonight's game and Chung has tallied three assists in the last two games.
