Rapids Add University of Denver Standout Nat Borchers and Goalkeeper Byron Foss to 2003 Roster

Team Signs Both Players to Developmental Contracts; Waives Steve Shak and Danny Jackson

DENVER, CO (03-17-03)- The Colorado Rapids today signed University of Denver standout midfielder Nat Borchers and Southern Methodist University goalkeeper Byron Foss to developmental contracts with the club. Both athletes will not count towards the 18-man full roster due to their developmental status. Details of the contracts were not disclosed.

Borchers, a current resident of Pueblo, Colorado was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation's (MPSF) "Player of the Year" in 2002 while playing for D.U. His solid performance with the Pioneers also earned him the honor of being named First Team All-Conference in 2001 and 2002. The 62 midfielder played for the Boulder Rapids Reserves in 2002 and the Denver Cougars in 2001, both teams from the Professional Developmental League.

Foss, 23, was 21-1 in his senior season in college leading the Mustangs to the NCAA quarterfinals in 2001. That same year, he was recognized as a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas All-America first team selection. Former German National Team star Jurgen Klinsman, a consultant for the Anschutz Enterntainment Group in Los Angeles, recommended the young goalkeeper to the Rapids coaching staff during the off-season.

Borchers and Foss are currently with the team in Guadalajara, Mexico as the Rapids continue with the second leg of their 2003 preseason tour.

The team also waived defenders Steve Shak and Danny Jackson. Shak, who was acquired from the MetroStars in 2001 and Jackson, who was selected by the Rapids in the 2002 MLS SuperDraft played both only one game for the Rapids in 2002.
