RAPIDS RELEASE THREE PLAYERS;
TRAINING SITE DEDICATION WEDNESDAY

DENVER -- (Monday, March 25, 1996) -- The Colorado Rapids released midfielders Joel Shanker, Eric Puls and Brian Hurley as part of Major League Soccer's requirement that each team cut its roster down to 22 players today.

The moves reduce the Rapids' training camp roster to 21 players, including defender Matt Komosko, who is expected to report Wednesday. Kmosko, the Rapids' seventh round pick, did not join the team for its San Diego Training Camp (March 9-24) due to obligations with the NPSL's Cincinnati Silverbacks. Komosko's Cincinnati teammate, defender Scott Cannon, will also report this week. However, Cannon, the Rapids' sixth round pick, will be unable to practice with the Rapids for four-to-six weeks after surgery for bone spurs in his ankle.

Major League Soccer has mandated that each team's official roster will be cut down to 18 players by April 15, and that each member's traveling squad will not exceed 16 players.

The Rapids will receive a fifth "marquee" player before April 15. Rapids Head Coach Bob Houghton is seeking a world-class goalkeeper.

The Rapids return to train in Colorado Wednesday morning at 10 a.m., while the official dedication of the Rapids' practice facility is scheduled for 4 p.m. that afternoon at Westminster City Park. In conjunction with the dedication, the Rapids will hold their second "Mect the Rapids" party of the preseason. From 4-6 p.m., following a brief training session, Rapids players and coaches will be available to the public for autgraphs and pictures. Raffle prizes at the event include autographed Rapids soccer balls and T-shirts, as well as authentic Rapid/Puma athletic gear. Fans can also purchase season tickets and memberships to the "Rapids Shooters" Kids Club.

The Rapids left San Diego with an unblemished 3-0 record including three shootout wins. Spring training standouts included midfielders Dominic Kinnear, Felipe Rodriguez and Chris Henderson and defenders Ian Butterworth, Steve Trittschuh and Troy Edwards.
