A win over the San Jose Clash on Thursday would boost the Rapids into first place in the Western Conference for the first time this season. Trailing the front-running Chicago Fire by one point through nine games, the Rapids would take sole possession of first place with a regulation win, and would also move into first with a shoot-out win. While the teams would be ties on points, Colorado takes the tie-breaker via its 1-0 win over the Fire in the only meeting between the clubs this season.
It will be Déjà vu all over again Thursday as the Colorado Rapids and San Jose Clash square off for the second time in seven days, this time at San Jose's Spartan Stadium. Colorado recovered from a San Jose goal just 55 seconds into the May 27 affair to beat the Clash, 4-2, at Mile High Stadium. The Rapids got goals from Wolde Harris, Ross Paule, Jorge Dely Valdes and a San Jose own goal to run their club-record winning streak to seven straight games.
Rapids midfielder Joey DiGiamarino is again out of the lineup after missing the last two games due to a deep laceration in his right foot. Kevin Anderson started both games at the left midfield slot in DiGiamarino's absence.
DiGiamarino suffered the injury while playing for the U.S. Under-23 Men's National Team in a 1-1 draw against Canada on May 19.
Defender Jason Bent will miss Thursday while serving a one-game suspension for caution-point accumulation. Bent picked up his fifth yellow card of the season on Thursday, giving him 23 caution points on the season.
Rapids defenders Chris Martinez and Steve Trittschuh will both miss Thursday's game due to personal matters.
The Clash were the last team to defeat the Rapids, coming back from two goals behind to beat Colorado, 3-2, in a shoot-out on March 27 at Spartan Stadium, exactly two months and one week before this Thursday's game.
Rapids forward Paul Bravo is questionable with a badly bruised lower left suffered in last Thursday's win over San Jose. The injury led to Bravo being substituted for at half-time. He was replaced by Jorge Dely Valdes. After his two-goal game at San Jose in March, Bravo has scored six goals and added six assists in ten games for the Rapids against his former club. Bravo led the Clash in scoring in 1996 (13 goals) before joining the Rapids prior to the 1997 season.
Colorado goes into Spartan Stadium, the site of its last loss, looking to win its fourth consecutive road game. After starting the season with back-to-back shoot-out losses in Los Angeles and then San Jose, Colorado has rattled off three straight road wins (at New England, Dallas and Chicago.) The three straight regular-season road wins is a team record.
With his goal and assist on Thursday, Jamaican forward Wolde Harris reclaimed the team lead in points from teammate Paul Bravo, who was forced to go off injured at half time. Harris' 14 points (5 goals and 4 assists) surpassed the 12 points (5 goals and 2 assists) of Bravo.
San Jose's two goals on Thursday marked the first time Colorado has given up more than one goal in regulation since March 27 after a string of six straight games of allowing one goal or less. The last team to score twice in regulation before Thursday? It was also these same Clash, who are the only team to score more than one goal in regulation against the Rapids all season.
