DENVER (Wednesday, August 12, 1998) - Rapids defender Joey DiGiamarino scored a goal in the 4th minute to help lead the U.S. Under-23 Men's National Team to a 2-1 victory over Hyde United in Manchester, England, on Wednesday. The goal was DiGiamarino's second in four games for the U.S. squad, which closed out a four-game tour of England with the win.
Ramiro Corrales of the NY/NJ MetroStars scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 48th minute for the Americans, before Hyde United's Steve Hall pulled a goal back just one minute from time.
The U.S. squad finished the tour with a 3-1 record in the four matches. DiGiamarino started all four games and scored the game-winner in a 1-0 win over Bolton Wanderers reserves on August 1. The Americans then went on to lose, 3-2, to Liverpool reserves on August 5, before shocking Manchester United reserves, 4-1, on August 12.
DiGiamarino, who played midfield for the U.S. team but most often plays in a defensive role for the Rapids, is expected to return in time to be in uniform for the Rapids' crucial Western Conference battle with the Dallas Burn on Saturday, August 15, at 7:00 p.m. MDT at Mile High Stadium.
