DENVER (Wednesday, Sept. 11, 1996) -- The Colorado Rapids today accepted an invitation to compete in the U.S. Open Cup, the nation's oldest and most prestigious soccer tournarnent. The Rapids will meet the Kansas City Wiz in a quarterfinal game, Sunday, Sept. 15, at Arrowhead Stadium. Game time will be 6:30 pm MT.
The U.S. Open Cup is a yearly, 83-year-old single-elimination tournament featuring the best teams in the United States. The winning team will receive $100,000 in prize money and the right to represent the U.S. and the MLS in 1997 international play.
The Rapids will make an announcement Thursday regarding its coaching situation. An interim coach will be appointed for the U.S. Open Cup matches and Colorado's final Major League Soccer game Sept. 21 in Washington, D.C.
If the Rapids win on Sunday, they will -- most likely -- host a semi-final U.S. Open Cup match at Mile High Stadium in late September or early October.
