DENVER (Thursday, Sept. 12, 1996) -- Colorado Rapids President Bob Sanderman announced today that Richard A. Levine would no longer serve as the Major League Soccer team's general manager. Sanderman said that he hopes to name a new general manager within the next month.
The Colorado Rapids failed to qualify for the league's inaugural playoffs and finished last in attendance, despite averaging almost 9,000 fans per game.
"Rich Levine was a very dedicated general manager with a great passion for the game of soccer, but we felt that we needed to change direction and move forward with ambitious plans for the 1997 season," said Sanderman, who will assume GM duties until a replacement is found. "Major League Soccer is alive and growing in this country and we are committed to continuing to bring world-class soccer and quality family entertainment to Denver. The Rapids have made Denver their permanent home and I believe the community will be greatly impressed with the 1997 version of our team."
