MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER TO CONDUCT NATIONWIDE TRYOUTS;

LEAGUE ACTIVATES TRYOUT INFORMATION HOT-LINE

LOS ANGELES (Wednesday, November 1, 1995) -- Major League Soccer will conduct open tryouts across the country over the next two months to identify American soccer players with the talent to make an MLS roster when play begins April 6, 1996.

MLS will be holding tryouts in all 10 MLS cities. Information on open tryouts for each of the MLS cities can be obtained by calling 800/678-1328. The information hot-line will be updated periodically as times, dates and sites are confirmed.

Prospective MLS players are invited to demonstrate their ability for league scouts, who are seeking top-level talent as MLS -- the FIFA and U.S. Soccer-sanctioned Division I soccer league -- prepares for its inaugural season.

While a large pool of domestic players with MLS potential have already been identified by league scouts, the open tryouts are geared towards finding talented players who may have been overlooked in the initial evaluation process.

"Because of the size of this country, there is the chance of players being missed through our conventional evaluation methods," said MLS Director of Player Development David Dir. "For that reason, we feel it is extremely important to offer as many opportunities as possible for players to make an MLS team. We want to make sure the top local players across the country get a chance to show they can compete on this level."

Players making strong impressions will be invited to the 1996 MLS scouting combine in early January, which will include players the league has already identified.

The Kansas City Wiz began the open tryouts last Saturday at the training site of the NFL's Kansas City Chiefs, with over 180 players participating.

"Each MLS team will have several international players, U.S. National Team players and Olympic Pool players, as well as players from the other U.S. professional leagues and some college stars," said Dir. "The competition for roster spots will be intense, but these tryouts could help us identify a handful of MLS candidates to make the league even stronger."

The Columbus Crew will host the next open tryout, November 4-5, at the Sports Ohio Complex in Dublin, Ohio.
