Edward Eid's GOAL TO GOAL
April 21, 1996 - Colorado Rapids vs Dallas Burn at Mile High Stadium before over 21,000
The Colorado Rapids defeated the Dallas Burn 3-1 in their inaugural game at Mile High Stadium in Denver, Colorado.
In the first half, both teams were evenly matched, with the Dallas Burn
having more missed opportunities. The Burn's most dangerous play came
when they penetrated the Rapids' defense and took a shot on goal hitting
the post. The Rapids took several long shots on goal, but were denied
with great saves by goalkeeper Mark Dodd.
It was not until the second half that the Colorado Rapids got down to
business. (Houghton obviously laid down the law at half time.) Balboa
dominated the midfield along with Matt Komosko, while Jean Harbor and
Shaun Bartlett dismantled the Dallas Burn defense:
RAPIDS Goal #1:
Harbor ball to Balboa, who scored in the 48th minute.
History is Made:
a. Rapids' first ever goal by Marcelo Balboa
b. Rapids' first ever assist by Jean Harbor
RAPIDS Goal #2:
Harbor took a shot on goal, but the ball was deflected by Burn goalkeeper,
Mark Dodd. Bartlett moved in and shot the ball in the net in the 57th
minute.
BURN Goal #1:
Dallas Burn, Ted Eck, who worked hard throughout the game, beat the Rapids
defense, and passed the ball to John Kerr, who scored in the 59th minute.
RAPIDS Goal #3:
Scott Benedetti took a shot on goal, but the ball was blocked, and bounced
towards Balboa who scored in the 64th minute.
Balboa was selected PLAYER OF THE GAME
